Theatre and Event Captioning

We are passionate about access and the arts

Especially theatre and work tirelessly to provide high-quality access to events for deaf and disabled communities. We work closely with our partners and service providers to develop their inclusivity and overall access provision. Enriching and enabling the deaf community to be involved in cultural and entertainment events is at the core of everything we do.

We have been working with our clients for the last four years to make theatre, festivals, talks and events accessible through BSL-interpreted and captioned performances, working directly with theatres to make the overall experience more accessible.

Our Partners

We have partnered with Digital 4, to revolutionise the captioning sector!

+

Digital 4 has transformed Theatre Captioning and access to the theatre for audiences with hundreds of Caption Units and Captioning Software supplied to venues throughout the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Their software can be used for Live-Streaming, Multi-Language output, Automatic Translation, and Automatic Live Speech-to-Text. We have chosen to work with them to provide a superior one-stop shop for all your captioning needs.

Captioning

Captioning is a form of live subtitling in which the speakers’ or actors’ words appear on a screen, projection or smart device, which provides scrolling text as the words are spoken. Captions can be displayed above, to the side, or creatively added within a theatre production on sets and backgrounds.

Captions can be provided as Open Access, which is accessible for everyone to see or Closed Access, which is accessible from personal devices. Both options work equally well, and we are able to advise on what will work best for your show.

Who can benefit from captioning?

As well as deaf audiences, there are many other people who can benefit from captions. They are useful for anyone for whom English isn’t their first language, for instance, or for people who need support with concentration.

Whether it is someone who doesn’t want to disclose that they are deaf, someone who hasn’t booked accessible tickets or someone who needs aid in concentrating, captioned performances can make a huge difference to someone’s theatre experience.

How it works:

A member of our team will discuss with you what we feel would be the best provision to meet the needs of your clients and create an accessible event. Once confirmed, our team will:

Before the show, our captioners will visit the venue to familiarise themselves with the location and provide advice on where to place screens.

Request a copy of the script/copies of speeches and a recording of the show in advance of the captioned performance, where available (This allows us to add sound effects and accents and identify speakers in advance of the event).

Our captioners will either watch the show or learn about the event content to aid them in creating the most accurate captions.

The script/speeches will formatted and added to our software prior to the event.

On the day, the captioner will arrive with plenty of time to set up equipment and prepare for the captioned performance (They will need to sit where they can see the caption box and hear the action onstage).

Once everything is set up, the captioner will run some final tests to ensure everything is working, and then it’s time for the show!

With our help, everyone can access your event and experience the magic of the theatre.

Our effective package means that the days of working with several companies to arrange equipment and captioning services are gone. Our bespoke packages mean that you only need to contact one of the team at Complete Communication LTD to organise equipment and captioning services, saving you time and money whilst ensuring your event is accessible. Our aim is to make the process seamless and to provide a high-quality service from start to finish.

In addition to making the arrangement of captioning equipment and services seamless, we will work with you to promote your event by raising awareness with our existing clients and sharing the event via our website and social media channels.
