Case Study – Kirsty Reed

Your Name

Kirsty Reed

Tell us about yourself!

I am going into my final year at Warwick University where I study Global Sustainable Development (BASc). Outside of my degree, I do competitive lifesaving, a bizarre but very fun sport, where I am also on the national committee and deal with all things to do with adjustments, welfare and accessibility.

When did you start receiving support from Complete Communication?

First year of my Degree – September 2021

What type of support did you receive?

BSL Interpreting

What difference has our support made for you in your education?

The support enables me to focus on my degree, form good relationships, and work well with my peers and lecturers. It also allows me to process and engage with the material rather than putting all of my energy into lipreading and actually hearing it in the first place. It really helps me to have someone there, especially in my seminars as otherwise I feel very isolated in the group discussion elements of my workshops as I struggle to lipread and follow everyone’s voices.

What would be your advice to others?

If there are issues with your support speak up either to your DSA Assessor or your Disability Advisor. You can even change providers if necessary, I did this and changed to CC and honestly it was the best decision I could have made.

Why would you recommend Complete Communication?

They are super responsive to emails and this helps reduce some of the admin on your part that you might have as a Deaf student in HE.

What is your favourite thing about Complete Communication?

The genuine nature of the staff. They seem to genuinely care and have an interest in supporting Deaf students and this isn’t something to be taken for granted.
